Neurotoxins block this release by cleaving specific proteins essential for acetylcholine’s release, thereby stopping the transmission of the nerve signal. Without acetylcholine, the muscle fibers cannot contract, resulting in a relaxed state of the muscle.
The effects of neurotoxins are both temporary and reversible, as the body gradually repairs and regenerates the affected nerve endings. Over time, new nerve endings grow and re-establish the ability to release acetylcholine, restoring normal muscle function. This regeneration process typically takes 3-6 months, depending on the individual and the toxin used. Consequently, the muscle paralysis or relaxation caused by the neurotoxin wears off, necessitating repeat treatments to maintain the desired effects.
